Paul Casey falls short in a dramatic playoff at the Omega European Masters; Thriston Lawrence wins for the third time

At Crans-sur-Sierre, a golf course set in the magnificent Swiss Alps, the Omega European Masters 2026 produced a nail-biting four-hole playoff. Paul Casey, the 49-year-old Englishman who plays for LIV Golf, held a three-shot lead after 54 holes and was chasing his first title since the Dubai Desert Classic in 2026. However, defending champion Thriston Lawrence of South Africa produced a brilliant birdie on the fourth extra hole to claim victory. Lawrence fired an eight-under 62 in the final round, with eight birdies and no bogeys, to set the clubhouse target at 18 under par. In the playoff, both players made three pars before Lawrence birdied to secure his sixth DP World Tour title and his third at this event, equaling the record of Seve Ballesteros. Model and Omega ambassador Cindy Crawford presented the trophy to Lawrence at Crans-sur-Sierre. Casey played with heavy emotion. In January, a devastating fire in Crans-Montana killed 40 people and injured more than 115. After taking a three-shot lead on Saturday, Casey pledged to donate all his prize money to charities supporting victims of that fire. Yet the pressure showed early in his final round. At the sixth, he made a double bogey after his approach bounced out of bounds. Incredibly, he still took part in a scheduled walk-and-talk interview and joked about the scorecard disaster. Casey then produced a stirring fightback with four birdies in five holes from the 11th, returning to the lead by one shot. But at the 18th, his wedge from the rough barely cleared a creek, only for him to make bogey and fall into a playoff. Lawrence, who had earlier made eight birdies on a blemish-free card, held his nerve and birdied the fourth extra hole to win. Lawrence later called it the most emotional victory of his career and praised Casey for playing outstanding golf. Casey, meanwhile, can look toward the future. At 49, he may rejoin the DP World Tour as a member for 2027 if LIV Golf’s future remains uncertain. He turns 50 in late July 2027 and would become eligible for PGA Tour Champions within a month. His competitive fire is far from extinguished.
